current issues involving promoting & selling goods & services
Current issues involving promoting and selling goods and services:
There are a number of issues that affect the promotion and selling of products that consumers should be aware of.
Rights to privacy
In Australian society, people expect to be protected from interference from others in their daily life. In product promotion sales, issues of privacy have been limited to direct selling. New technologies such as the internet has a greater level of invasion. People are receiving a large amount of messages including advertisements.
Spam
Spam is when someone is continuously receiving messages and emails electronically and automatically. The messages received are unsolicited. Most spam is usually advertising for poor-quality products or schemes. Spam is not expensive to send because most of the cost is paid by the receiver or the Internet service provider. People do not wish to receive spam or commercial advertisements. Spam is an example of invading someone's personal privacy.

Telemarketing
Telemarketing is the marketing of goods or services by mean of telephone calls that are usually unsolicited. It has become unpopular with consumers in recent years as new technology has been created. New technologies have made it possible for computers to make the phone calls. Telemarketing is another example of invasion of personal privacy. During the last decade, many telemarketing laws have emerged. For example. companies in the US have obtained a list of people who prefer not to receive telemarketing calls. They have also made it illegal for telemarketers to call anyone whose name was on the list. Some Australian states are prohibiting the use of automatic calling devices.
A new style of direct marketing
Through the means of new technologies, companies are able to create a 2-way communication between the buyer and seller. This presents the risk of the seller taking advantage of a potential buyer e.g. A child can be involved in a transaction without the knowledge of their parents.
Hidden Advertising
Hidden messages or images in a advertisement in which are accused of subconsciously persuading a consumer to purchase a good or service without being aware that we have seen the images or messages.
Tobacco and Alcohol Advertising
As the advertising of tobacco is banned, the removal of the promotion of alcohol is discussed by medical experts as both products pose the risk of death or injury through the consumption of the product. The impacts of the goods can be reduced through the banishment of advertising or restricting the promotion of the product.
